Joséphine Sagna, 1989 in Stuttgart geboren, in Ulm aufgewachsen, inzwischen in Südfrankreich lebend, Tochter eines Senegalesen und einer Siebenbürger Sächsin, thematisiert in ihren farbstarken Gemälden ihre Erfahrungen in und mit mehreren Kulturen, insbesondere Fragen der Identität der Schwarzen Frau in einer überwiegend weißen Mehrheitsgesellschaft. Sie fokussiert gängige, oft rassistische Stereotypen und Vorurteile und die eklatanten Unterschiede zwischen Eigen- und Fremdwahrnehmung.
Statt konkrete Personen realistisch zu portraitieren, fängt Joséphine Sagna eine von Diversität geprägte Frauen-Power ein: Sich selbst inszenierende Frauen stellen sich selbstbewusst den westlichen Schönheitsidealen entgegen – teils unterstützt von Schriftzügen und Graffiti-Parolen.
Als Vorlagen dienen der Künstlerin Posts in den sozialen Medien und Bilder aus ihren eigenen Netzwerken. Indem Sagna die flüchtigen Fotos aus den Medienfluten fischt und daraus großformatige, "klassische" Gemälde kreiert, macht sie die Energie der im Alltag oft unsichtbaren Frauen für alle dauerhaft sichtbar.Im November 2023 hat der Deutsche Bundestag ein Gemälde von Sagna angekauft. Damit ist sie eine von nur 25 KünstlerInnen, die für die hauseigene Kunstsammlung ausgewählt wurden.
